June 14, 2019

It's time to round up three of your quickest, most clever and resourceful friends or family members.

Registration is now open for the Amazing Adirondack Race, to be held Sunday, July 14, starting with a pre-race meeting at 9 a.m. in Lake Placid. This all-day event, organized and hosted by Zonta Club of the Adirondacks, is part adventure, part trivia challenge and part scavenger hunt.

Teams will race from location to location in the greater Lake Placid area via clues, tasks, riddles and other creative challenges in order to discover the "top secret" location of the finish line after-party, to include food, beverages, fun and door prizes.

Each team must have one smartphone with camera and video technology and a vehicle in order to compete. Teams finishing in first and second place will win big prizes, and all participants have a chance to win door prizes.

Early registration is strongly encouraged in order to secure your team's spot, as only a limited number of teams will be able to compete. In addition, the first 80 participants to register before July 1 will receive a free race T-shirt with their registration.

Sarah Galanti Shoemaker, of Saranac Lake, competed in last year's Amazing Adirondack Race with her husband, Joe Shoemaker, and two of their children. Shoemaker described how initially she had to "drag" her family out of the house to the race, but found that they "quickly got sucked in by the spirit of competition. It was a great day!"

The Shoemakers not only rose to the challenge; they "literally raced another team to the finish line for an exciting second-place finish," Shoemaker described. "It was a very interactive and fun activity to do as a family. We had to work together to solve clues, perform dances, navigate obstacle courses, etc. Although we didn't win the first-place prize, we did win the door prize of a new SUP (stand up paddleboard)."

"I was most impressed by all of the creativity and ambition that went into planning the race," said Toni Teuschler, of Elizabethtown, who competed in the race with her daughter Lise Huckens and two of their friends. "It was definitely challenging and exciting. It was also really nice to get together with everyone at the after party." The party was held at the Mount Pisgah Ski Area in Saranac Lake last year.

Each team must provide an official team email and cellphone number at registration. Clues, tidbits and challenges will be texted intermittently after July 1 to all teams via the team's designated cellphone number, up until the day of the event. On July 7, final race details and clues will be sent to all the teams via each team's designated email address.

The cost for a team of four is $100, plus a $7.72 registration fee.

All net proceeds will support the club's charitable work for gender equality. You can both register your team for the event and obtain more information about it online at
