SARANAC LAKE - A three-car crash on state Route 3 Monday afternoon sent two of the five people involved to the hospital and shut down the main vein of traffic connecting Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake for over an hour.

State Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash.

The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad and State Police responded to the bridge by the Second Pond state boat launch at 4:54 p.m. Traffic on both lanes was shut down, and cars were turned around to take a detour route. The Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department shut down the highway from Panther Mountain Road, and the Saranac Lake Police Department shut it down from Edgewood Road.

At the bridge, a white Volkswagon GTI, gray Toyota Tacoma and gray Buick Enclave all had smashed fronts and twisted tires.

SLVFD Chief Brendan Keogh said there was a "minor entrapment" in the Enclave, which required members to pop a door open to retrieve one of the people involved.

Ambulances left the scene shortly after 5 p.m., cars on the Saranac Lake side finished turning around at approximately 5:30 p.m., and members were back in service at 6:37 p.m.
