Volunteer fire departments from Bloomingdale, Paul Smiths-Gabriels and Saranac Lake responded and provided tools and assistance to extricate people from the vehicles.

The road was shut down after the collision until around 10 a.m., according to State Police. At 8:15 a.m., cars were lined up on Route 3 coming from Bloomingdale. Some parked on the side of the road, and others remained in the road, waiting to get through. But the wreckage had not been removed, and no one was allowed through.

Just after 8:30 a.m., firefighters ushered cars back the way they had come. A firetruck left the scene and was parked just outside Bloomingdale with its lights on, stopping approaching cars and sending them back the way they had come.
