ZONTA NEWS: Zonta gives to local and national organizations

September 13, 2019
By MIRIAM HADDEN - Zonta Club of the Adirondacks , Lake Placid News

In September, Zonta Club of the Adirondacks will donate $3,500 raised by the Club through its recent fundraising efforts.

The club will donate $500 worth of gas cards to Stop Domestic Violence, a local organization providing advocacy, counseling services and safe housing to individuals seeking to leave domestic violence situations.

Nicky Sudduth, an advocate for Stop Domestic Violence, said the organization is most in need of new (rather than used) Straight Talk cellular phones, Straight Talk phone cards and gas cards in $10 increments. The organization distributes these items, as needed, to individuals (typically women) seeking relief from violent situations, to help them have independence in making and keeping appointments for legal and other necessary services.

Those interested in making a donation to Stop Domestic Violence should contact Nicky Sudduth or one of the other advocates directly at their office in Westport.

Zonta Club of the Adirondacks will also donate $1,000 to each of three national nonprofit organizations, Girls on the Run, She Jumps, and Unchained at Club members selected these organizations because they further Zonta's mission to promote women's advancement and well being.

Girls on the Run offers adolescent girls a "fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running" as a way to empower girls with confidence and a framework for achieving goals. To learn more about this organization visit www.girlsontherun.org.

She Jumps provides a variety of educational programs for women and girls, with the goals of empowering women and increasing participation of women and girls in outdoor activities. The organization also provides scholarships and low-cost options to women and girls. The organization's goal is to "see girls learning, having fun, and connecting in an encouraging environment with amazing instruction and support from female mentors." More information about this organization is at www.shejumps.org.

Unchained at Last has been a leader in the national movement to end child marriage and is the only nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women and girls leave arranged and forced marriages in the U.S. The organization provides free legal and social services to women and girls who are seeking to avoid or escape an arranged or forced marriage. Learn more about the organization at www.unchainedatlast.org.

Zonta Club of the Adirondacks is a charitable organization with the mission of advancing gender equality. Visit our Facebook page or our website at www.zontadistrict2.org/adirondacks/index.html.
