GARDEN CLUB NEWS: Garden Club active after blooms leave

November 7, 2019
By DOT BEATTY - Lake Placid Garden Club , Lake Placid News

Although many of us continue to close down our gardens and prepare them to survive our winter weather, our activities remain through fall and early winter.

On Monday, Nov. 18 (a change from Tuesday, Nov. 19) at 2 p.m., we will have our fall workshop at Elderwood at Uihlein. The theme will be Thanksgiving, of course.

The following Wednesday, Nov. 20, a luncheon at the Crowne Plaza Library room, noon to 2 p.m., will feature Antonia Asa-Thomas, floral designer at Price Chopper, who will demonstrate making small arrangements from holiday flowers. Come join us and bring a small planter such as a green or red pepper, vase or cup and a few types of greens. You will need a reservation and payment to cover the luncheon cost. Call Mary Merrill at 518-523-2933 to reserve. Check our website for details: On Thursday, Nov. 21, we make village swags at the Oval skating shack from 10 a.m. to noon. Call Cherise Bixler (518-524-2211) if you can help so she can gather enough supplies.

Dec. 8 will bring our Christmas Party at Wiseguys from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. All members are invited, and guests and spouses are encouraged.

Our last workshop at Elderwood at Uihlein is Dec.17 at 2 p.m. Festive holiday arrangements will be created with and for the residents.

A huge thank you goes out to Nancy Master for hosting our October participatory gathering at her house. We all designed floral arrangements using a pumpkin as a vase. Talented designer Becky Deptula from Weston, Massachusetts helped our creative side blossom. Great ideas, unique arrangements and wonderful company made for a warm and inviting gathering.

Triangle Garden wound up last week with the addition of white and orange pumpkins. With Paula Politi as chair, a total of 31 workers showed up this year. Leading in attendance were Nancy Colon, Barbara Friend, Linda Friedlander, Kathy Lamb, Lethe Lescinsky, Cheryl Morris, Claire Thayer and Sally Urban. Other members and volunteers showed up when possible throughout the season.

Come join the fun and service opportunities that are scheduled as this gardening season winds down. Do check out our website for more information on these and other projects in which we are involved. As always, you can find information about past and future Garden Club activities and club officers at A special thank you to all our officers and chairpersons for an outstanding year. You all did an incredible job planning and delivering a memorable season. Thank you for your time and commitment. Your dedication does not go unnoticed. After we all take a deep breath, it will be time to start on 2020 Garden Club planning!
