LAKE PLACID - The ski season in the Olympic region officially began on Friday, Nov. 15 with the opening of the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center in Wilmington. A day later, the Mount Van Hoevenberg Cross-Country Ski Center outside Lake Placid opened for the season.

Over the weekend, Whiteface ran the Face Lift to Broadway, Lower Valley and Fox with a Terrain Park, according to the state Olympic Regional Development Authority, which also manages 1932 and 1980 Olympic venues - Olympic Center, Olympic Speedskating Oval, Olympic Jumping Complex and Olympic Sports Complex at Mount Van Hoevenberg - along with the Gore and Belleayre Mountain ski centers.

This year, ORDA is launching its new radio-frequency identification cards, or "SKI3" cards. They allow skiers at Whiteface, Gore and Belleayre to pass through gates and access ski lifts without taking the card out of their pockets. Skiers can also reload their card accounts remotely, using the same card over multiple visits and at any of the three ski centers ORDA manages.

"The state and ORDA have invested more money into the Olympic venues and ski resorts than at any other time," ORDA CEO Michael Pratt said in a statement Thursday, Nov. 14. "The team has been working very hard, and we are all excited to begin the winter season."

Whiteface was closed Monday through Friday this week and is expected to open again Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 23-24, according to Elise Ruocco, of ORDA's communications department. She said about 1,200 people attended the three-day opening weekend at Whiteface.

Whiteface wasn't the first ski center in New York state to open for the season. That distinction went to the Bristol Mountain Ski Resort in Canandaigua, which opened Thursday, Nov. 14. Greek Peak Mountain Resort in Cortland County and Gore Mountain in North Creek opened Nov. 15. The Titus Mountain Family Ski Center south of Malone opened Saturday, Nov. 16. Belleayre Mountain in Highmount is expected to open Nov. 29.

Mount Van Hoevenberg

After picking up about 9 inches of fresh snow last week, the cross-country ski center at Mount Van Hoevenberg opened for the season on Saturday, Nov. 16. During construction of the new ski lodge, patrons are parking in the cross-country stadium in front of the current lodge. The ski center is remaining open weekdays as well as weekends, weather permitting.
