ZONTA CLUB NEWS: Zonta Club of the Adirondacks finishes out 2019 strong

November 28, 2019
By NICOLE BUREAU - Zonta Club of the Adirondacks , Lake Placid News

Zonta Club of the Adirondacks' annual Autumn a la Carte Gala on Nov. 7 at Heaven Hill Farm in Lake Placid was yet again another success, and we could not have done it without the support of our community.

This event raised more than $7,000, which will be donated to help women and girls both locally and around the world. A special thanks to Saratoga Eagle, Salt of the Earth Bistro, Big Slide Brewery, Purple Saige, Simply Gourmet, Enuf Chocolates, Eleanor's Pasta Kitchen, Wyatt's, The Cottage, Good Bite Kitchen, Desperados and Old Mountain Coffee for providing the food and drinks for the event. We would also like to give a big shout out to Drew & Annie for providing delightful music all night long and the many businesses that contributed to our silent auction.

What's next for Zonta? It's our annual Free the Girls Bra Drive, Dec. 7. Do you have bras that you never wear, hiding in the back of your dresser drawer? Maybe you have a few bras that just aren't the right fit, that are too lacy or too racy?

Now is the time to get rid of those extra bras that are cluttering your life. Zonta Club of the Adirondacks has the solution for you - one that will help "spark joy" so to speak: thin out your excess stuff by helping others in need.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, from noon to 3 p.m., we will collect gently used and new bras of all sizes and styles in front of the Adirondack Community Church, 2583 Main St., Lake Placid to help women rescued from sex trafficking who seek to reintegrate into "normal" life. With the bras collected, women in countries such as El Salvador, Mozambique and Costa Rica will start their own businesses selling the bras in the second-hand market with the help of the non-profit Free the Girls.

Last year, we collected over 300 bras! The club also aims to raise at least a dollar per bra in donations to assist in the cost of shipping the bras overseas. Can't make it to the event? Bras can be left at the Adirondack Foot Sanctuary on Main Street, near the church.

Free the Girls is known for their important work which successfully reintegrates women who are victims of sex trafficking by providing them with economic opportunities and financial independence. Sex trafficking is a modern day form of slavery that particularly impacts women and girls. It involves forcing the victims to engage in the commercial sex trade through force, fraud, and coercion. Mozambique, El Salvador and Costa Rica are countries with high numbers of sex trafficking victims; however, the problem exists in communities all over the world.
