DOT plans Route 86 repaving

January 24, 2020

LAKE PLACID - The state Department of Transportation is planning to overhaul the Sara-Placid section of state Route 86 this year.

The village of Lake Placid has received official notification of the upcoming construction, expected to stretch from the railroad tracks in Saranac Lake to Elm Street in Lake Placid, Mayor Craig Randall announced at the village board meeting Tuesday, Jan. 21. The department is planning to do corrective pavement maintenance along that stretch.

As the department works on the road, drivers could experience delays similar to what was seen when the DOT repaved sections of that route this past September. Drivers said at the time that the road work caused a major disruption of traffic, with some residents reporting hour-long delays.

Traffic will likely be reduced to one lane as the road is paved, according to Randall.

"I respectfully requested they conduct a public information session for people in that neighborhood," Randall said, referencing the stretch of road between the Outpost Plaza - which houses businesses such as Price Chopper- to Elm Street.

"In addition to that, we have a noise ordinance they would need to apply for an exception from," he said.

Randall said the department hasn't yet informed the village of the dates when the construction will happen, but the DOT has said the project is expected to be completed by late this year or early next year.
