NY racinos eyeing longer hours amid competition

June 27, 2014
Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Visitors to New York's racetrack casinos may soon be able to gamble the night away under a proposal to let racinos stay open until 6 a.m.

The measure passed the Legislature before it adjourned last week and now awaits action by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Video lottery gambling halls now must close at 4 a.m.

The longer hours are intended to help boost business at the racinos, several of which have seen a drop in revenues.

Taryn Duffy, spokeswoman for Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway, says it's common for there to be hundreds of people on the casino floor at 4 a.m. on weekends.

The bill would also let racinos increase the amount of free play credits they can give customers.

Cuomo's spokesman says the bill is under consideration.
