OWASCO LAKE, N.Y. (AP) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is set to welcome professional fishermen to the Finger Lakes for the Bassmaster Governor's Challenge.

The governor's office says Saturday's event at Owasco Lake is designed to promote fishing and other recreational activities in upstate New York.

Cuomo, a fisherman himself, plans to attend the competition, which will be followed by a lunch and awards reception in Auburn.

Other attendees include Rep. Dan Maffei, Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney and former Syracuse University and NBA basketball player Derrick Coleman.

Cuomo's office says recreational fishing is an important contributor to the state's economy and notes that the Finger Lakes are home to an estimated 128 species of fish.
