Weather slows Main Street progress, but it’s almost done

LAKE PLACID — Crews were back at it on Tuesday, Oct. 11 — after the holiday weekend — to finish the multi-million-dollar reconstruction work along Main Street, including final paving, sidewalk work and line painting, according to Haley Breen, community development director for the town of North Elba and village of Lake Placid.

“Essentially, the cold and the wet has been delaying a lot of work since the majority of what is left involves paving,” Breen wrote in an email on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Jobs on the to-list include putting up signs (probably next week), detectable warnings, final touches on grates and drains, final striping, landscaping and finishing the paving on Mirror Lake Drive and Olympic Drive, as well as some parking lots and driveways.

On Wednesday morning, crews were seen paving on Mirror Lake Drive, finishing sidewalks and landscaping, and painting lines in the smaller parking lots. By that time, lines had been painted on Main Street from the top of Mill Hill to the post office and two-way traffic had been restored along that stretch. One-way traffic remained from the post office to Saranac Avenue.

“There is not much left on the actual roadway, but the detour is still necessary as they finish up,” Breen wrote. “Final timing depends on weather, really, but they are still anticipating wrapping up these items this fall.”

This is the second year of Main Street reconstruction, and the goal was to be complete before the 2023 Winter World University Games in January.
