Adirondack Daily Enterprise wins New York state journalism awards

SARANAC LAKE — The Adirondack Daily Enterprise was honored with two awards in the New York News Publishers Association’s 2022 Awards for Excellence, which were announced Tuesday, June 13.

Enterprise Managing Editor Elizabeth Izzo won an award for Distinguished Editorial Writing in the under 10,000 circulation class.

Enterprise Staff Writer Aaron Marbone was awarded for Distinguished Breaking News Coverage.

Editorials

Izzo, who became managing editor in 2021 and has been with the Enterprise since 2019, won Distinguished Editorial Writing for four editorials. The first, titled “Time to address the elephant in the room,” was published on March 7, 2022 and encouraged Lake Placid elected officials to improve communication and try to mend relationships with residents who felt unheard. “Hope to be found in a sad state of affairs,” published on Sept. 1, 2022, opined on the affordable housing crisis and Lake Placid’s first housing lottery. The July 23, 2022 editorial “Will anything change with Ironman?” encouraged elected officials and the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism to take a hard look at its contract with the triathlon and consider whether Lake Placid is getting enough in return for hosting the event. The last editorial, published on Nov. 5, 2022, asked the question: “Should the Glenview Preserve have public access?” The answer: “Whatever the Adirondack Land Trust decides to do with the property, we hope that the Glenview Preserve will stay largely undisturbed,” the editorial reads.

“In her editorials, Adirondack Daily Enterprise Managing Editor Elizabeth Izzo deals directly with the thorny issue of whether growing tourism truly benefits Lake Placid residents,” the category’s judge wrote. “She effectively poses the question: Will the village become an overpriced resort town where most year-round residents struggle to survive? Her points are clear and persuasive and she offers smart, workable suggested remedies.”

Breaking news

Marbone, staff writer for the Enterprise since 2017, won Distinguished Breaking News Coverage for his story titled “Water line break displaces Donald E. Smith residents,” published on Dec. 28, 2022. In the story, Marbone reports on a sprinkler line break in the Tupper Lake apartment complex, which displaced 48 residents and triggered a large community response to help those residents.

“This story examines what happens when a plumbing malfunction adversely impacts a sizable group of vulnerable people and how a community immediately comes together to help,” the category judge wrote. “Lots of details and good quotes from many people, makes this spot reporting strong.”

Contest judges for the New York News Publishers Association Awards selected winners from 435 entries submitted by 29 daily newspapers across New York state.
