LAKE PLACID — Eleven Cub Scouts from Pack 8110 and their families filled the Lake Placid Baptist Church gymnasium Monday evening, Oct. 30, to race their homemade Pinewood Derby cars.

The yellow race track spanned from one end of the gym to the other. Scouts began their evening with a test run of their cars and then enjoyed a pizza party, dressed in Halloween costumes, while festive songs played in the background, such as Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” “Monster Mash” by Bobby “Boris” Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers and “The Addams Family” theme song. A parent even dressed up Little Debbie Strawberry Shortcake Rolls as Pinewood Derby cars, using OREO Mini cookies as wheels.

Scouts competed in four separate races, one for each den — Wolf, Bear and Webelos — and one for the entire Pack 8110. Cub Scouts are organized into five different den categories: Lion, kindergarten; Tiger, first grade or 6 years old; Wolf, second grade or 7 years old; Bear, third grade or 8 years old; and Webelos, fourth grade through joining a Scouts BSA troop.

Scouts handed their cars to Pack 8110 Cubmaster Travis Sweet, who placed them on the starting line. Three cars usually raced at a time, except during the Webelos race, which only had two cars in the competition. Cars crossed a time-tracking finish line that posted each car’s place in a red number — 1, 2 or 3 — on a small, black electronic sign above the finish line and sent the times via wire to Sweet’s laptop computer.

In addition to Sweet, who leads the Wolf and Webelos dens, Bear den leader Jen Scull helped out, and Boy Scout Troop 10 Scoutmaster Torry Hoffman attended with some of the Boy Scouts, who helped with the ceremonies — handing out ribbons.

Ryan’s green and brown car was the fastest of the evening. His two times — 2.4302 seconds in the Webelos race and 2.4334 in the Pack 8110 race — were not matched by anyone. Reuk’s red car was the second fastest, posting times of 2.4409 seconds in the Pack 8110 race and 2.4475 in the Bear race.

The Pinewood Derby race results are listed below.

Wolf: Finley, first (2.5530); Jordan, second (2.6008); Daxton, third (2.6954); Chase, fourth (2.7561); and Wyatt, fifth (5.1737).

Bear: Reuk, first (2.4475); Hunter, second (2.4862); Dashel, third (2.5499); and Knox, fourth (2.7200).

Webelos: Ryan, first (2.4302); and Joseph, second (2.7040).
