The Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department responded to a house fire at 60 Grandview Ave. with three trucks and 23 members at 12:47 p.m.

Firefighters initially responded to investigate smoke seen in the area of Elm Street and Grandview Avenue; a passerby had noticed smoke and called it in. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke and upgraded the call to a working structure fire.

“Once we were able to gain entry, we had a quick knockdown,” said LPVFD First Assistant Chief Jennifer Marshall.

Firefighters ventilated the fire through the roof. According to Marshall, they undertook “quite a bit of overhaul” to extinguish the blaze. The house is still standing, but LPVFD estimates it is either a three-quarters or total loss. Essex County Emergency Services is investigating the cause of the fire and will determine how much, if any, of the house is salvageable.

The home had two units and is listed as a short-term vacation rental on several sites. According to a press release from the Northeastern New York chapter of the American Red Cross, the owner also lived in the home. The Red Cross is currently providing the homeowner with financial assistance for shelter, food and clothing.

Nobody was inside the home at the time of the fire except for the family dog. Firefighters and EMTs worked to revive the dog, but he did not survive.

The department was back in service at 5:20 p.m. Lake Placid received mutual aid from the Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department, Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Wilmington Fire Rescue, Keene Volunteer Fire Department, Keene Valley Hose and Ladder, Jay Fire Department and Upper Jay Fire Department.
