People who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and are experiencing difficulty navigating the health system, looking for vital community resources, or want to connect, can text 516-262-3263. A social worker will reply and let callers know when they will receive a phone call.

“Integrating a texting feature into our hotline enhances accessibility for individuals affected by breast cancer, facilitating prompt communication and addressing their needs efficiently,” said Nina Foley, hotline/volunteer coordinator.

In addition, New Yorkers can always call the toll-free hotline at 800-877-8077. All services are free and confidential. The breast cancer hotline is available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., 365 days a year and is answered in both English and Spanish. The program listens and supports women, men and their families. Individual and family counseling is provided by licensed social workers and peer support is provided by professionally trained and supervised volunteers, all of whom are breast cancer survivors.

“We are excited to launch text messaging and expand the breast cancer hotline,” said Reyna Machado, director of the program. “For over 40 years, the hotline had been providing emotional support as well as resources to the breast cancer community. Text messaging is another way for women and men to reach out and connect.”

By adding text message capabilities to the hotline, messages can be sent to individuals who make contact, coordinate call backs with volunteers and increase efficiency, allowing the program to reach a growing population preferring the ease of communication through text message.

“Our program is always ready to evolve to meet the needs of the community,” Foley said.
