LAKE PLACID — The 55th annual Lake Placid Horse Show began on Tuesday, June 25 at the North Elba Show Grounds, kicking off two weeks of top horse show competition here.

The Lake Placid Horse Show will continue through Sunday, and it will be followed by the I Love New York Horse Show from July 2 to 7. The two shows will be highlighted by a $175,000 Grand Prix.

Last year, the Grand Prix of Lake Placid was won by Jimmy Torano, while Jordan Coyle won the Richard M. Feldman Grand Prix. While Lake Placid Horse Show Communications Manager Marty Bauman wasn’t sure if Coyle was returning this year, he noted that Torano will not be in Lake Placid.

“His son is a rising star and they have him hooked up with a trainer, who specializes in teenagers and they were out in Michigan these two weeks, so Jimmy was out there with him,” he said.

While neither Grand Prix Field is completely set, Bauman said Laura Chapot who has won seven grands prix in Lake Placid, including in 2022 when she swept both events.

The grands prix are one of over 100 classes of competition are featured each week. The action will start at 8 a.m. each show day with classes running until approximately 5 p.m.

“This is like if you have a giant baseball complex and one field is the Yankees, the next field is triple A, the next is high school and little league,” Bauman said. “That’s what you have here. You have little kids on ponies, you have juniors, which are riders up to age 18. You have amateurs, who are over 18 and you have your professionals.”

Among the various competitions will be USHJA World Championship Hunter Rider Northeast events, Green Hunter Incentive classes, hunter and jumper classics and divisions for Young Jumpers and 0.85m Junior/Amateur Jumpers.

“The jumpers are very easy to understand, you get over all of the fences, that’s good, if you knock something down, that’s bad,” Bauman said. “The hunters are judged subjectively — style and form.”

The Lake Placid Horse Show is once again sold out all of its stalls, but as of Tuesday, the I Love New York Horse Show was not sold out.

“We’re not likely to get new entries last minutes,” Bauman said. “Usually people know if they are coming ahead of time. But it’s a little bit down.”

The two-week-long event will bring back some of its side shows including the Doggie Costume Contest, which will return at noon Sunday, July 7 during the I Love New York Horse Show.

“We try to emphasize that (event is) for everyone in town,” Bauman said. “It’s all about having fun and having some laughs.”

Admission to the Lake Placid Horse Shows is $8 on weekdays — with the exception of Tuesday when the event is free — and $10 on weekends. Children under the age of 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Tickets will be available at the entrance gate.
