Winter Speaker Series begins Wednesday
The Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society is pleased to announce the first program in its 2025 Winter Speaker Series: From Axe Blazes to Highlines, presented by Tony Goodwin. In this program, Goodwin will examine how the network of area hiking trails has evolved over the past 150 years, and how the techniques for trail building and maintenance have evolved as use levels have increased.
Goodwin, Town of Keene Historian, served as chief of the Adirondack Mountain Club’s first professional trail crew in 1979. From there he went on to be the Venue Manager for Cross-Country and Biathlon at the 1980 Olympics, followed by five years as manager of that facility. In 1986, he joined with other local skiers to found and ultimately serve as Executive Director of the Adirondack Ski Touring Council, which built and maintained the Jackrabbit Ski Trail while also assuming winter maintenance responsibility for other area cross-country ski trails. Complementing this winter-oriented trail work, he served as Executive Director of the Adirondack Trail Improvement Society, which maintains over one hundred miles of hiking trail in Keene Valley. Starting in 1985, Goodwin also edited five editions of the Adirondack Mountain Club’s “High Peaks Trails” guide.
The program will be at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts auditorium on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The event will also be recorded and can be viewed on the Society’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@DigitalMedia-LPNEHS after January 15th.
