Saranac Lake Artworks hires executive director

Lorraine Merrihew

Saranac Lake ArtWorks is proud to announce the organization was selected to receive $25,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts.

This funding is a critical component that enabled the board of directors to take that final step to initiate full-time status. The board is most grateful to be operating in New York state, where there is strong support for the arts.

The operations of ArtWorks are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Oce of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. This year is going to be a landmark year for Saranac Lake ArtWorks. Lorraine Merrihew has been named the first Executive Director.

ArtWorks was founded in 2008 by a small group of artists, with the goal of using the arts to generate a positive economic impact for our community. Not just those involved in the arts, but the entire community. The organization has promoted Saranac Lake as an “arts destination” through our annual advertising campaign, our member directory brochure, our website, social media, and our popular events — the third Thursday ArtWalks, Studio Tours and the nationally recognized Adirondack Plein Air Festival.

Most of the successes of ArtWorks in the past 17 years have been managed by volunteers. We have great expectations for Lorraine and what she will be able to achieve as our Executive Director.

She is from the area, has a degree in Business Management from Cazenovia College, and worked part-time for us in 2024. From the beginning, ArtWorks sought to bring attention to our area for the abundance of arts within the Adirondack environment. We do not wish to compete with our world class outdoor recreation opportunities, but to add value to them. Artists, whether visual, literary or performing, are often inspired by their surroundings and their creative products can enhance the experiences of visitors and residents alike.

Artists, writers, musicians, dancers, craftspeople, and performers are invited to join ArtWorks and be a part of the flourishing arts community. Check the website, SaranacLakeArtWorks.org or contact Lorraine at admin@saranaclakeartworks.org for more information.

The Adirondack Arts & Entertainment calendar can be found on our website as well, the most comprehensive listing of art events in the Adirondack North Country. Whether as a creator or a consumer, all are welcome to enjoy and participate in the arts.

Starting at $1.44/week.
