‘The Nature of the Place’ book release party is April 17

On Thursday, April 17 at 2 p.m. naturalist, author, photographer and Adirondack guide Ed Kanze will visit Saranac Village at Will Rogers and speak about his new book, “The Nature of the Place: On The Flora and Fauna of the Adirondacks,” just published by North Country Books, an imprint of Globe Pequot Press.
Kanze will share some of the stories included in the book while showing selected nature photos from his personal archive. There will be time for questions and discussion, and refreshments will be served. Copies of “The Nature of the Place” will be available for purchase and signing, along with copies of Ed’s preceding book, “Adirondack: Life and Wildlife in the Wild, Wild East.”
A seventh-generation Adirondacker, Kanze is descended, among an array of regional ancestors, from Daniel and Hannah Brownell, who settled along the Sacandaga River about 1795. This is his seventh published book. Ed writes a “Wild Side” column for every issue of the Adirondack Explorer, contributes a column “Wild Things” to the Bedford, newspaper The Recorder, and has contributed work to a variety of magazines including Adirondack Life, Audubon, Bird Watcher’s Digest, The Conservationist, Garden, The Living Bird, National Parks, Natural History, Middlebury, Utne Reader and the Vassar Quarterly. As an Adirondack guide, he leads walks and gives nature talks for a variety of private clients. In addition, he does, or has done, extensive nature programming for the Adirondack Experience, the AuSable Freshwater Center, Hamilton College, the Lake Placid Lodge, Middlebury College, Paul Smith’s College, The Point Resort on Upper Saranac Lake, SUNY Albany, SUNY Cortland, SUNY-ESF, SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Potsdam, Vassar College, White Pine Camp, High Peaks Resort, the Wild Center and Whiteface Lodge. Ed had the pleasure of being a programming mainstay for many years at the Wawbeek Hotel, where he served until its closing in 2007. Ed co-guided four trips to Australia and New Zealand and one to Alaska for Smithsonian Journeys. Ed and his friend Josh Clement produced a video series, “Curiously Adirondack,” that aired on Mountain Lake PBS and has been watched on YouTube in nearly every country on Earth. Kanze is also featured in the 2008 PBS documentary “The Adirondacks,” written and produced by Emmy award winning producer Tom Simon and aired and re-aired across the country.
Kanze loves to speak at Saranac Village at Will Rogers where he is privileged and pleased to have many friends, and where his wife, Debbie, serves as Activities Director. He lives in Bloomingdale. This program is free and open to the public. Call 518-891-7117 for more information.
