Thomas A. Ulasewicz

Thomas A. Ulasewicz, Esq. of Hadley, New York, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024 at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. He was 76 years old.

Born on July 29, 1948 in the Bronx, he was the son of NYC detective Anthony Ulasewicz (Tony U.) and Mary Dumiak Ulasewicz. Tom, affectionately known by close friends and family as Tommy, grew up in Flushing, attending St. Kevin’s and later Marist College followed by St. John’s Law School.

It was at college that he met the love of his life, Patricia Morrissey. On June 19, 1971 they were united in marriage and made their first home in Yonkers, where they welcomed their only daughter, Kara Mary Ulasewicz, a year later.

When the Watergate scandal broke and Tony and Mary relocated full time to The Cottage in Hadley, Tom, Patti and Kara moved into the Ulasewicz family duplex in Flushing, where Tom and his siblings grew up.

As Patti and Tom graduated with their advanced degrees, Tom’s career evolved to move them upstate to Clifton Park and Lake Placid, where Tom was actively involved in the 1980 Winter Olympics logistics and had the amazing experience of sitting next to former NFL player Lynn Swan during the famous USA/Russia “Miracle on Ice” hockey game.

Tom specialized in environmental law and was a member of the NYS Bar Association, employed by Fitzgerald Morris Baker Firth in Glens Falls at the time of his passing. Prior to FMBF, Tom was special assistant to the general counsel and acting general counsel at the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. He received a fellowship from the German Marshall Fund and was an NGO representative to the executive body of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe on Transboundary Air Pollution in Geneva, Switzerland. Tom was also past Executive Director of the NYS Adirondack Park Agency.

An avid outdoorsman, Tommy enjoyed hunting with his brother-in-law Joe (which was more about communing with nature than coming home with a trophy), fishing with any kid who wanted to learn, golfing with his close friends, and spending time at The Cottage in Hadley, where he and Patti eventually moved year-round.

Tommy is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia; daughter, Kara Ulasewicz Travis and husband Al; siblings, Peter Ulasewicz and wife Mary, Antoinette Nealon, Alice Lochmann, and Manya (Mary) Ulasewicz; as well as the Flushing cousins that grew up next door as additional siblings: Raymond Prochak and Marianne Prochak Downes. Beloved uncle and cousin, Tommy also has numerous nieces, nephews and close family that will fondly remember his laughter and love.

The public is welcome to pay their respects on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Rose & Hughes Funeral Home, 200 Church Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010, with a service to follow at 6 p.m.

Private entombment will take place at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands on Friday, Nov. 15, 2024.
