Santa Claus visit
–
Inclement weather forced Santa Claus to make his appearance on Mirror Lake Sunday afternoon via horse and cutter, but over 500 children, and nearly a like number of adults, were on hand to greet him with the children all receiving a stocking filled with toys and games.
And right in the middle of the proceedings, when Santa was at his busiest handing out the gifts to the eager-eyed youngsters, an unidentified child stole the show by offering the bewhiskered old gent a present — a popcorn ball made by the young admirer.
Immediately following the program on the lake, which was sponsored by the Lake Placid Lions Club, members of the organization and their families attended the annual party held at the Majestic Restaurant, where Santa appeared again. Singing at the party was led by Mrs. Leo Dashaw and musical interludes by Harry Brunt on the accordion. Comic movies were shown to the children.

Speedskating revival
–
Speedskating, the sport that originally put Lake Placid on the map as a winter resort, may be on its way back to prominence here through the efforts of a group of speedskating enthusiasts who met at the arena on Monday night and talked of the revival of the redevelopment of the sport.
It is the hope of the new group to be able to promote the weekly meets on Mirror Lake rink as it was the custom in years gone by.
Milford Dietz, a member of the 1932 Olympic speedskating team, was elected temporary chairman of the new organization and Leo LeBel named temporary supervisor of the daily training sessions from 4 to 5 p.m. until such time as a permanent coach can be appointed. Miss Cornelia Bonsignore was named secretary.
A two-day meet on Feb. 21-22 is hoped to be obtained by the organization to be known as the Lake Placid Speed Skating Championships.

Fawn Ridge open
–
The Fawn Ridge Ski Center has opened for the 1947-48 season with many new improvements. A new open slope and trails have been added to care for more skiers and a “beginners bowl” is being installed to keep inexperienced skiers out of the way of tow users and fast skiers.
The Fawn Ridge Ski School, under the direction of Fran Sullivan, member of the NYSPSTA, for its third year will have its headquarters in the new ski shop. He will be assisted this year by Ben Rand, former St. Lawrence University skiing star. The school will be conducted on a private slope next to the beginners bowl.
Electric lights have been added in all of the buildings, and music will be played on the open slopes and trails allowing skiers to ski to music.
The new ski shop and first-aid room is centrally located and convenient for all purposes. Overnight checking of skis will also be a new feature so that people will not have to carry their skis back and forth.
The snack shop is ready to help the cold and hungry skiers.
It is also expected that a telephone will be installed in the near future.
