Blackfly spraying

A state Supreme Court judge recently refused to prohibit aerial blackfly spraying in the towns of Keene and Black Brook.

Environmental groups had sought an injunction against spraying, saying it caused irreparable harm to people and the environment. The judge termed those charges “speculative.”

Keene and Black Brook will be permitted to continue their spray programs indefinitely, pending a court ruling on a motion for a permanent injunction.

The groups, including the Audubon Society and Adirondack Council, filed for an injunction against the towns in May.

1983 graduates

After 12 years of education, 70 seniors earned diplomas at commencement exercises Saturday at Lake Placid Central School.

Speaking to a packed auditorium, valedictorian Lorie Ann Kopchick said, “Our attention will be on the finish line as we run to grab the prize. We have to see if we have the right stuff.

“We’ll always remember that Lake Placid Central School gave us our start.”

Salutatorian Amy Gelles said that people and families must realize their input makes a difference.

“Students, parent and teachers should all work together to reduce the complexity in their lives,” she said.

Dr. Gordon Sato, director of the W. Alton Jones Cell Science Center, was the commencement speaker in Lake Placid.

“Those who generally lead satisfied lives are those who are able to give and receive love,” he said.

At Keene Central School, 15 seniors received their diplomas at Saturday’s commencement ceremonies. It was the largest graduating class in several years.

Valedictorian Leona Wells urged future Keene students to make the best of their school years — both scholastically and through activities.

Pointing to “The Buck Stops Here” banner in the school auditorium, she told her fellow graduates that they should apply that slogan to their life outside of Keene Central.

Salutatorian Tina Crowningshield related how her father made her walk without crutches after she had broken a leg.

“It’s again time to throw away our crutches,” she said.

Students chose Conni Cross, the kindergarten teacher at Keene Central, to serve as commencement speaker.

“Reach beyond and give of yourself — your life, your love,” she said. “We want you all to accomplish your dreams because we love you.”

Horse show begins

A record 641 horses are entered in the 1983 Lake Placid Horse Show, which began Tuesday morning at the Lake Placid Horse Show Grounds.

The sizable increase over last year’s record 493 horses strengthens the Lake Placid Horse Show’s position as one of the major equestrian events in the nation. This year’s competitors represent 25 states, three Canadian provinces and eight countries — the United States, Canada, the Bahamas, Venezuela, Ecuador, the Netherlands, France and Japan.
