Vaudeville show

The all-star vaudeville production at the Happy Hour Theater on Monday evening, July 28, in aid of the Adirondack Fund for the Tuberculosis, promises in the words of its promoters to bring “Times Square to Placid.”

Dr. Edgar Mayer in giving this benefit attraction is doubly fortunate in securing the aid of William Morris, known throughout the country as the American manager of Harry Lauder and in the Adirondacks as a producer of star events for worthy causes, and with him, Reed Albee, son of Edward Albee, proprietor of the B.F. Keith chain of theaters. The younger Mr. Albee is the possessor of a very remarkable baritone voice and will appear personally on the stage.

Governor visit

It was learned at the Stevens House early today that reservations have been made for Gov. Al Smith and party for dinner at that hotel tonight. The governor is motoring through the Adirondacks and arrives here for over the weekend. He is accompanied by Mrs. Smith and their three children. While here, the governor will attend the New York City Home Rule Commission at the Stevens House.

Jewtraw visit

Charlie Jewtraw, idol of Lake Placid skating fans and known all about town as “our Charlie,” is spending a few weeks in Placid visiting his relatives and old friends. Since the close of the skating season last winter, Charlie has been in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He was the only American representative who captured a trophy at the Olympic speedskating races last winter at Chamonix, France, and the beautiful, large gold inscribed medal which he has now received is the climax to the many achievements of Charlie in the skating world during the past several winters.

New golf course

The new golf course of the Lake Placid Country Club will be opened to the public on Saturday, July 26. After an almost unprecedented record, nine of the eventual 18 holes have been gotten ready for play, with fairways, tees and putting greens, in two months actual time since the purchase of the property by the Lake Placid Holding Corporation.

The credit for this achievement is due in large measure to the head green keeper, Frank H. Williams, who has been directing a large force of men, teams and trucks, and who has been tireless in his efforts to get the course ready for play this season.

Winter rules will be played throughout the season to give the seed a chance in the fairways and some of the greens will be but temporary, while the permanent greens are still in course of construction.

The clubhouse which is now practically completed is a low rambling frame structure, most artistic in design.

A large sign is being erected at the junction of the Cascade Road and the road leading to the golf links, while smaller signs with arrows will be placed along the highway from the Lake Placid village line, so a stranger will have no difficulty in finding the course.

Adirondack County

What is the necessity of an Adirondack County?

What advantages would be derived from the formation of a new county?

What territory should it embrace?

If not in favor of the project, what are your chief reasons for objecting?

These are some of the questions that will appear on a questionnaire sheet which is about to be issued under the auspices of the Adirondacks Chambers of Commerce in an effort to determine whether a new county would be an advantage or not to residents.

Starting at $1.44/week.
