The Lake Placid Rotary Club has always been active in supporting the community.

In 2020, they took things a step further by creating the Lake Placid, NY, Rotary Foundation. This foundation helps groups that don’t want to become official charities by serving as their fiscal sponsor.

One of those groups is the Lake Placid Community Ski Program.

This program, started by Heather Odell and her co-organizers Mandi Smith and Andrea Farrell, gives kids in grades kindergarten to six the chance to cross-country ski. It provides the equipment, lessons, a place to ski, and even transportation.

For a town known for winter sports, it’s surprising how many kids didn’t have access to these activities.

Heather shared her idea with Rotarian Debbie Erenstone, who introduced her to the Rotary Foundation. With their help, the program secured initial funding and started offering affordable skiing at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

In its fourth year, the program moved to Scott’s Cobble, thanks to Karen and Brian Delaney. They generously offered free use of their trails and equipment rentals.

The program relies on community volunteers to help with everything — getting kids into their boots and skis, teaching lessons, and leading groups. These volunteers include parents, grandparents, older students, and others who simply want to pitch in.

Now in its sixth year, the program has grown. Some students have moved on to high school and are aiming to compete. The program supports these students by providing skis and covering travel costs for competitions around the Northeast.

They’ve also purchased extra equipment so kids can ski on their own outside of lessons.

The first day of the new season was last Friday, a sunny and cold winter day. I worked with the third and fourth graders. It was a joy to watch the kids improve.

At first, some were unsure of themselves, but by the end, everyone was tackling the hills with confidence.

Emily, the instructor, asked each child what they loved most about skiing. Answers ranged from “going fast downhill” to “the hot chocolate at the end.”

For me, the day was a rewarding experience. As a Rotary member, it’s exciting to see how this program brings joy and opportunity to local kids.

Watching them ski and smile reminded me why this work matters. The Lake Placid Community Ski Program is a true example of what a community can accomplish together.

Starting at $1.44/week.
