Summer internship deadline for journalism students is March 1

Editors at the Lake Placid News and Adirondack Daily Enterprise are proud to continue their tradition of giving young journalists the opportunity to explore this profession by offering summer internships.

Usually the interns get school credit. When we have the funding, which isn’t always the case, they can get paid as well. Either way, our interns get valuable lessons from editors who have a wealth of knowledge to share about reporting on small-town life in New York state’s Adirondack Park and real-world experiences inside our Saranac Lake newsroom.

Our interns may cover a bake sale one day and a visit from the governor the next day. They may cover an international sporting competition, a board meeting or a fundraiser for a civic organization. They may climb a mountain or paddle a pond and share their day trip with readers.

Our interns’ stories and photos are printed in the newspapers and posted on our websites so they can build a portfolio, which is necessary to apply for future journalism jobs.

This summer, the LPN and ADE each have an opening for a paid journalism internship for college students through the New York Press Association: $2,600 for six consecutive weeks (30 hours a week).

Applications are due on March 1. The PDF application form can be downloaded from the NYPA website (www.nynewspapers.com, click on NYPA, then Internships).

Any student who is currently, or will be, enrolled in a recognized program of undergraduate study is eligible to compete for the NYPA summer internship, and applicants must attend college during the 2022-23 academic year.

Applications must be sent directly to our community newspapers: news@lakeplacidnews.com for the Lake Placid News, attention Editor Andy Flynn; or news@adirondackdailyenterprise.com for the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, attention Managing Editor Elizabeth Izzo.

Newspapers will select one candidate from the applications received and will forward their candidate of choice to the NYPA. The final winners of this internship opportunity will be chosen by the NYPA Foundation Board of Directors, and interns will be notified by mid-April.

We can’t stress enough to journalism students how valuable an internship in a professional newsroom is to your future careers, and we encourage you to apply. Good luck!

Starting at $1.44/week.
