Thanks for the memories, Lake Placid

There seems to be some confusion from a year-old story. In a Facebook post from November 2023, announcing my appointment as editor/publisher of the Adirondack Daily Enterprise and Lake Placid News, some people are now under the assumption that I’ve just been promoted to the position and they are congratulating me.

Just the opposite. I’m leaving. That’s an old post. My resignation letter from two weeks ago read, in part:

“It is with a heavy heart, after a 30-year career in the newspaper industry, that I submit my resignation as Editor/Publisher of the Adirondack Daily Enterprise and Lake Placid News. … Thank you for the opportunity to lead such a fine group of newspaper people in Saranac Lake. Any successes I had are due to their hard work and dedication.”

My last full day was Wednesday, Nov. 6, in time to lay out my last LPN.

Since beginning my newspaper career in 1994, I’ve worked hard and done my best, but I’m ready for a new challenge.

The first lady was a candidate for a New York seat in the U.S. Senate at the time. The following day was the president’s 54th birthday. Flynn, 30 years old at the time, was the managing editor of the Adirondack Daily Enterprise. Air Force One is on the runway behind him. (Photo provided)

My next job will be at the state Department of Environmental Conservation Region 5 headquarters in Ray Brook, still in communications, but this time in the dispatch office. It’s an important and challenging job, and I’m looking forward to further serving the community in a different capacity.

I’ve spent about 15 of my almost 18 years at Adirondack Publishing at the LPN, mostly as the editor, and I’ve loved the work, the people and the journey.

I have a great team — from the front office to the newsroom to the press and mail rooms to our carriers and delivery drivers. Past and present, I’ve been in the trenches with these wonderful people, and I’m honored that I was able to work side by side with them for so long.

I’ve also had talented columnists, great partners in the community and very supportive readers. I enjoyed teaching newspaper skills to elementary, middle, high school and college students and young reporters.

To you all, I say thanks for the memories.
