LP venues highlight Olympics in leadup to Paris

LAKE PLACID — Winter sports venues in Lake Placid and Wilmington will host events highlighting the Olympic spirit as the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games officially kicks off with opening ceremonies on Friday, July 26.

The venues are operated by the state Olympic Regional Development Authority. Lake Placid was the host of the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games. The Paris Olympics conclude Sunday, Aug. 11.

Live streaming

Visitors can view live broadcasts and updated medal counts of the Paris 2024 Games at each of the Olympic venues in Lake Placid and Wilmington: The Olympic Center, The Olympic Sports Complex at Mount Van Hoevenberg, the Olympic Jumping Complex and Whiteface Mountain. Additional coverage of the Games will be available for viewing on a Jumbotron in Lake Placid.

Parade of Nations in Lake Placid

Prior to the opening ceremonies in Paris on Friday, Camp Placid students will participate in a Parade of Nations on the James C. Sheffield Olympic Speedskating Oval as local youth learn more about the Olympic nations, the values of the Olympic Movement, and participate in the making of Olympic Torch replicas. The Parade of Nations is expected to begin at 11 a.m.

Community Inline Skating Night

Community Inline Skating Night will take place on Monday, July 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the James C. Sheffield Olympic Speedskating Oval. Participants are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue to support Team USA. The event is free, with rental gear available. The Olympic Center will be lit up to support Team USA.

Olympic Mascot Scavenger Hunt

Ongoing throughout the Paris Olympic Games, the scavenger hunt will be spread across a variety of local businesses and Olympic Authority venues with prizes awarded to the winners.

Lake Placid Olympic Museum

The Lake Placid Olympic Museum, located inside the Olympic Center, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will host a variety of events during the Summer Olympic Games, with continued programming that includes Touch-A-Torch, Story Hour and Craft, Olympic Truce, Behind the Scenes: Exhibit Testing, and private tours.
