State time trial champs held
JAY — Around 125 entrants competed in the Team Placid Planet’s West-Woodward Memorial Time Trial — the 2024 New York State Time Trial Championships — on Aug. 18.
Sunny skies greeted the racers, but so did a stiff headwind on the out leg. The event, which was held on state Route 9N between Jay and Keene, featured categories for cyclists in paracyclists, recumbent cyclists and tandems open to those aged 9 and up.
The top local finishers were Team Placid Planet’s Bill McGreevy of Wilmington and Rich Karaz of Lake Placid, with silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 60-64 category.
Other top area finishers included Douglas Chase of Plattsburgh, with a silver in the men’s 70-74 group; Sabine Amoriell of Peru, won bronze in the women’s 55-59; Mary Duprey of Plattsburgh earned gold in the women’s 60; Tara Freeman of Elizabethtown placed second in the Novice Women; Chris Grant of High Peaks Cyclery won the gold in the men’s open paracycling; Devann Murphy of Keeseville earned gold in the women’s open paracycling; Kris Fisher of Saranac Lake took home a silver in the men’s category 4, Nick Gouwens of Jay earned bronze in the men’s 35-39 and Ed Armstrong of Plattsburgh placed third in the men’s 50-54.
