Blue Bomber girls run to McQuaid Invitational win
LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid girls cross country running team continued its dominating season Saturday, Sept. 28, winning the Division 2 race at the 59th annual McQuaid Invitational at the Genesee Valley Park in Rochester. The girls Division 2 race featured 341 finishers across 33 different teams from New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
The Blue Bombers had four girls finish inside the top 55 and walked away with a team total of 121 points. They were followed by Norwood-Norfolk in second with 133 points and Beaver River in third with 158 points. The Saranac Lake girls were ninth with 298 points.
Leila Fey was the top finisher for Lake Placid, placing sixth overall in 19 minutes, 16.4 seconds. Teammate Kai McKinnon (19:48.4) placed 11th, while Maya Garrison (20:24.4) was 18th and Norah Francis (21:34.2) placed 55th.
The Blue Bombers were rounded out by Jenna Fay (22:00.9) in 79th, Holly Erenstone (22:03.1) in 82nd and Rose Wenzler (27:09.3) in 275th.
Isabel Griffin, of Rocky Grove High School in Pennsylvania, was the overall winner of the girls Division 2 race in 18:41.2. Pulaski’s Grace Carguello (18:48.0) was second and Norwood-Norfolk’s Maddie Carista (18:57.9) was third.
Cadence Kennedy was the lone Red Storm girl in the top-25, and finished in 24th with a time of 20:46.3. Saranac Lake’s Addi Ash was 75th in 21:55.4, while Asa Bruno was 80th in 22:01.2.
On the boys side, Lake Placid placed 12th as a team with 502 points in the Division 2 race, which featured 56 teams. Last season, the team placed 31st in this race. Maple Grove won the boys race with 136 points, Northeast Bradford was second with 196 and Oakfield-Alabama/Elba was third with 252.
The Blue Bombers had four runners finish inside the top 150 of the 440 person race. Aidan Fay led the way for Lake Placid with a 15th place finish in 16:26.2, while Colin Francis (17:37.3) was 64th. Graham Scull (18:56.7) was 138th and Connor Mannion (19:04.1) in 144th
The final five Blue Bomber runners included Jesse Carlson (20:01.2) in 216th; Nicholas O’Brien (21:42.0) in 339th; Jim Gugliemi (21:56.0) in 346th; Robert Bowen (24:41.9) in 422nd; and Calvin Branchaud (25:30.8) in 432nd.
Maple Grove’s Ethan Verbosky won the boys race in 15:23.0.
The Saranac Lake boys finished 18th as a team in the Division 1 race with 500 points. East Aurora won the race with 76 points, followed by Oneonta with 117 and Oil City (Pennsylvania) with 157.
Emmett VanBuskirk was the top Red Storm finisher in the Division 1 race, crossing the line in 17:38.3 for 70th place. Teammate Keaton Daley (17:57.0) finished 90th out of 410 runners.
Gage Feider, of Alden, took home the boys Division 1 crown in 15:13.9.
