High School Roundup: Bomber girls hoops secure third victory
LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid girls basketball team defeated the Johnsburg/Minerva Irish Jaguars 43-14 at home on Monday, Jan. 13.
The Blue Bombers got off to a fast start, out scoring the Irish Jaguars 16-1 in the first quarter and never let up en route to their third victory of the season.
Lake Placid’s Anisa Cecunjanin led all scorers with 16 points. The team also had strong contributions from Margaret Thatcher, Ellie Shipman and Ella Moodey. Thatcher scored eight points, while Shipman added seven and Moodey scored four. Elyse Hathaway, Autumn Branchaud, Eliza Fitzsimmons and Johnilyn Corrow chipped in two points each.
Norah Caselli paced Johnsburg/Minerva with 10 points, while teammates Lilly SanAntonia and Kaylie O’Hara scored two points each.

The Keene girls basketball team narrowly edged out host Lake Placid on Friday, Jan. 10.
The Beavers got off to a hot start, outscoring the Blue Bombers 12-3 at halftime. While Lake Placid was solid in the second half it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback.
Juliana Tremblay led Keene with 14 points, while Liana Shambo, Elsa Jacobsen and Vivian Smith added six points each.
Lake Placid’s Cecunjanin led all scorers with 19 points. Moodey added eight, while Corrow had two and Thatcher had one.

The Lake Placid boys basketball team got off to a rocky opening half in a Jan. 14 home game, and were unable to mount a comeback falling 61-38 to the Crown Point Panthers.
The Panthers jumped out to a 24-5 lead in the first quarter, before extending their advantage to 42-9 at halftime. After the intermission, the Blue Bombers outscored its opponents 29-19.
Crown Point’s Trevor Harris, who broke the Section VII scoring record on Thursday, Dec. 19, record a team-high 30 points. Teammates Jared Kimball scored 11 points and Austyn Taylor had nine. The Panthers are now 4-6 overall on the season.
Seb Cecunjanin scored a game-high 34 points for the Blue Bombers, which included four 3-pointers. The senior guard’s efforts on Tuesday pushed his career point total to 845, making him 155 away from 1,000.
Hugh Kissel and Brendan Murphy scored two points each for Lake Placid.

The Lake Placid boys basketball team suffered a 51-33 loss to the Seton Catholic Knights at home on Saturday, Jan. 11.
The Blue Bombers’ Cecunjanin recorded a team-high 23 points. Murphy, Kissel, Owen Hayes, Emerson Sweet and Phoenix Colby scored two points each. Lake Placid dropped to 0-8 overall.
Seton Catholic’s Michael Mannix led his team with 23 points, while Oliver Hughes had 17 points.

NORDIC SKIING

SARANAC LAKE — The Section VII Nordic ski teams, which include Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Keene, raced at Dewey Mountain on Tuesday, Jan. 14 in the 5-kilometer skate technique race.
Following a Blue Bombers’ sweep last week, the Saranac Lake squads were the ones who swept Tuesday’s race. The Red Storm boys prevailed by a single point, recording 11 points to Lake Placid’s 12. The Saranac Lake girls took home the win with a score of 8 points, while the Blue Bombers girls didn’t have enough racers to score points.
On the boys side, Colin Francis of Lake Placid posted the fastest time once again, finishing in 15 minutes, 30 seconds. He was followed by Saranac Lake’s Mason Stoddard in 15:45 and Lake Placid’s Aidan Fay in 15:52.
In the girls race, Saranac Lake’s Tyler Burth continued her winning ways, finishing first in a time of 18:08. It was Burth’s third individual victory in Section VII racing this season.
The Blue Bombers’ Maya Garrison took second place in 18:26, beating Saranac Lake’s Cadence Kennedy by 1 second. Zarela Gulli was Keene’s top finisher, placing eighth in a time of 21:38.

The Saranac Lake Placid boys hockey team suffered a 7-3 loss to the Saranac Central Spartans on Thursday, Jan. 9 at the Ameri-Can North Sports Center in Plattsburgh.
Ayden McCormick scored a hat trick for SLP, while Ryan Bartholomew added two assists. Teammates Carson St. Louis and Evan Harvey chipped in with one assist each.
On the other side, Saranac Central’s Ryan Campbell scored two goals and had one assist. Ashtyn Catlin had two goals, while Gabe Moore Nolan Miner and Chase Carpenter each scored one goal.
The Spartans’ Brody Macomber had three assists and Adrian Barnes had two. Landon Giroux, Tom Sorensen and Jackson Coryer each added one assist.
Moore connect on a goal at 3:08 into the first period, before McCormick netted the equalizer a few seconds later to make the score 1-1.
In the second period, Saranac Central connected on three straight goals to push the score to 4-1, before McCormick netted a power play goal — set up by St. Louis — at 15:21 in the period.
The Spartans offense remained hot in the final period, scoring on three consecutive goals. McCormick buried the final goal of the game on assists from Bartholomew and Harvey.
Cassidy Goodman recorded 35 saves for SLP, while the Spartans’ Shawn McLane had 13 stops. SLP, which fell to 4-4 overall, was out shot 42-16.
