SLP hockey teams earn victories
LAKE PLACID — A season ago, the Tupper Lake boys hockey team swept Saranac Lake Placid in three straight games. But this year, SLP got its revenge.
The SLP boys completed the three-game season sweep over the Lumberjacks with a 8-1 rout on Jan. 24 during the Lake Placid Winter Carnival tournament game at the Olympic Center’s 1932 Jack Shea Arena.
SLP head coach Josh Spanburgh said sweeping Tupper Lake was a goal of his team’s heading into the season.
“We needed to redeem what happened last year,” he said. “They took it to us and took three from us. This year, we went out and took three from them while playing some pretty good hockey.”
SLP had 10 different player record a point as Ayden McCormick led the way with a hat trick, which pushed his season total to 22 goals, breaking the SLP single-season goal record that he set last year with 19. McCormick also scored in the SLP’s 6-3 loss to to Aquinas Institute in the second game of tournament on Saturday, and now has 23 goals.
“Honestly right now, his shot is deadly,” Spanburgh said. “Not just his shot, but his ability to get positionally in a good spot to take that shot.”
Braydon Harvey had two goals and an assist, while Ryan Bruce, Carver Ball and Will Landriault also scored for SLP, who had four of its last five prior to Friday’s game.
SLP’s Ethan Knight added three assists in the win as Bruce, Evan Harvey, Owen Lawrence, Carson St. Louis, Ryan Bartholomew and David Montroy each had one. Cassidy Goodman had 18 saves in the win, which Spanburgh said everyone chipped in.
“Cassidy did a good job holding the fort down in the net,” he said. “It’s nice to see Carver Bell get a goal, it’s nice to see Ryan Bruce get another goal and even David Montroy with his first points of his career on an assist on Carver’s goal. I’m really proud of the overall game.”
On the other side, Gavin Mitchell scored the lone goal for the Lumberjacks, who dropped to 0-13-1 overall. Braydon Shannon recorded 25 saves in net.
SLP eventually got the first goal when Bruce stole the puck in the neutral zone and fired a shot above Shannon’s blocker side.
However, Mitchell evened thing up when he got behind the SLP defense and beat Goodman over the left shoulder with 4:45 remaining in the first period.
SLP scored within the first 30 seconds of the second period when Knight made a cross ice pass to Braydon Harvey, who quickly found the back of the net. SLP then connected on four straight goals — three from McCormick and one from Landriault to close out the middle period.
Bell and Braydon Harvey each tallied a goal in the third period to close out the contest.
In the second game of the tournament, the SLP boys fell 6-3 to Aquinas Institute on Jan. 25. McCormick had one goal and two assists and St. Louis added a goal and two assists. Bartholomew also scored for SLP, while Mackaid Nicholas chipped in with an assist.
Goodman had 28 saves in net for SLP, which dropped to 5-7-1 overall. Aquinas Institute’s Reagan Gray had 17 saves.

SARANAC LAKE — After struggling to find the back of the net in recent weeks, the Saranac Lake Placid girls hockey team turned a dominating offensive performance on Jan. 23 en route to a 6-3 victory over the Salmon River Shamrocks at the Saranac Lake Civic Center.
The victory helped snap SLP’s seven-game losing skid, while also improving the team’s record to 4-10-1 overall.
“It’s exciting for the girls,” SLP head coach Josh Dann said. “They’ve been working hard and it’s just nice to see our girls be able to put the puck in the net and get a big win for our team. I’m happy for them. I’m excited for them and it’s a big win for us.”
Emma Clark scored three goal for SLP, while Addison Colby, Whitney Warner and Madison Blinn also scored. Harper Strack had two assists while Colby, Blinn, Emii Colby, Stephanie Kilbourne-Hill, Marley Logan and Marissa Reardon chipped in with an assist each.
It’s the first time since Dec. 15, that the girls team has scored three or more goals. In the past five games, SLP had only scored two goals.
“We’ve been talking about just getting shots on net, and crashing the net,” Dann said. “Our girls are always working hard and tonight we were just able to find the back of the net.”
On the otherside, Calysta Cree scored two goals for Salmon River, while teammate Anastasia Terrance also scored. Embry Skidders, Taytum Cook-Francis, Julia Jackson and Cecelia Conners added one assist apiece for the Shamrocks, who dropped to 2-8 overall.
Clark got the ball rolling for SLP, connecting on a pair of goals within the first five minutes of the game.
Terrance added a power play goal late in the first period, to push the score to 2-1. However, Addison Colby responded with less than two minutes left in the opening period to push the advanatge back to two.
Blinn extended SLP’s lead with goal in the second period before Warner added another early in the third, and Clark completed her hat-trick at 5:06 left in the final frame.
Cree netted back-to-back goals for the Shamrocks with less than five minutes left in the game.
SLP’s Kelsey McKillip, who Dann said has been the team’s “Steady Eddy” all season, had 25 saves en route to the victory. Raeya Bryant had 22 saves for Salmon River.
