Fluoride opponents

Opponents of fluoridation came to the Lake Placid Village Board meeting Monday, arguing that putting fluoride in municipal water supplies is a violation of personal liberties and a potential health hazard.

About 10 fluoridation opponents attended the meeting. Last week, those in favor of fluoride spoke. The village board has said it will make a decision on the issue on Sept. 10.

Mayor Robert Peacock said the village had discussed fluoridation more than 20 years ago and decided against it. Now a state and county program to encourage fluoridation offers to pay for the installation and the first year’s operation of a fluoride system, Mr. Peacock said.

Rush in concert

Rush, one of rock’s most popular and enduring bands, will bring its successful tour to the Olympic Center for an 8 p.m. appearance on Sept. 18. The popular Canadian trio will be joined by special guest Fastway.

During their summer tour, the band has been featuring songs from its hit platinum album, “Grace Under Pressure.”

Mike Tyson returns

Rising boxing stars like Mike Tyson and Mylon Watkins highlight the card at the U.S. Junior Boxing Championships at the Olympic Center Wednesday through Saturday.

The event, for 17- and 18-year-olds, is sanctioned by the U.S. Amateur Boxing Federation. All matches but the finals will be held in two rings at the 1980 Olympic Arena.

Tyson, of Catskill, New York, won his international debut in Lake Placid last fall when the USA met the West German national team. His opponent threw in the towel after just seconds had elapsed in the first round. Tyson, the 1984 National Golden Gloves champion, was runner-up in the Olympic trials at the heavyweight division to eventual Olympic gold medalist Henry Tillman.

Sabres, Bruins here

The Buffalo Sabres, who finished one point behind the first-place Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League’s Adams Division last season, will face the Bruins in an exhibition game on Sept. 22 at the Olympic Center.

“We’ll definitely play a quality Bruins squad,” said Scotty Bowman, Sabres head coach. “We’ll have about 60 players at the training camp.”

The Sabres and Bruins were evenly matched last year, splitting their games 4-4. Each won two games away and two at home. Both teams lost in the preliminary round of the Stanley Cup playoffs last season in three straight games.

Buffalo succumbed to Montreal, and Boston dropped to Quebec.

Starring in the Buffalo lineup again this season will be goaltender Tom Barrasso. He accumulated several prestigious honors at the end of the 1983-84 season, including NHL Rookie of the Year, Vezina Trophy recipient and selection to the NHL’s First Team All-Star squad.

Buffalo’s offensive attack will be led by Dave Andreychuck, who led the Sabres scoring against Boston last season with two goals and eight assists.

Starting at $1.44/week.
